Review #6 (Microphone)

8. Condenser Mic needs power supply (48v Phantom power). Why?

- To polarize plate to create electrostatic force

9. List 3 main microphone polar patterns

i) Cardioid (incl. super, hyper)

ii) Bidirectional

iii) Omnidirectional

10. Which polar pattern is frequency dependent at Lo Frequency?

- Omni

*Pattern breakdown: All microphone patterns are Frequency dependent

i) At low frequency: the pattern becomes 'omni'

ii) At high frequency: the pattern becomes tighten

11. How does 'capsule diffraction' effects Mic frequency response?

- Distortion/Resonances in the H.F. response due to reflections within the capsule

12. Situation that Bi-directional pattern is best one to use:

*Ribbon Mic (Bi-directional)

- In contrast —> 'Farthest'

- Bandwidth (A range of Frequency) —> 'Narrowest'

*M-S (Mid-Side) technique

- The Mid capsule pickups the direct sound

- The Side capsules pickup ambient & reverberant sound
