- The directional response of a Mic refers to its sensitivity at various angles of incidence with respect to the front (on-axis) of the microphone

- Mic's sensitivity with respect to direction and frequency over 360° ==> such a chart is called   "Microphone polar patterns"

- Mic's directionality can be classified into two categories:

a) Omni-directional polar response

b) Directional polar response

*Omni-directional Mic —> pressure-operated device that's response to sounds that emanate from all directions

: The diaphragm will react equally to all sound-pressure fluctuations at its surface, regardless of the source’s location

- Pick-ups that display directional properties are 'Pressure-gradient' devices. This means that the pickup is responsive to relative differences in pressure between the front, back, and sides of a diaphragm

- Purely pressure-gradient Mic ==> Bi-directional Mic (Ribbon Mic)

Such a ribbon Mic's diaphragm is often exposed to sound waves from both the front & rear axes, it's equally sensitive to sounds that emanate from either direction

- 'Pressure gradient' mechanism applies to —> Ribbon, Dynamic, and Condenser microphones

*Acoustic Operating Principle in microphone:

- Pressure

- Pressure-gradient

1) 'Pressure'

- Pressure transducer, receptor, or Mic

- Reacts to any change in air pressure around it

e.g. An omni-directional mic

2) 'Pressure gradient'

- Pressure-gradient transducer, receptor or Mic

- Reacts to differences in air pressure upon the 2 faces of a diaphragm or ribbon

e.g. A directional Mic (Ribbon, Cardioid)

*Ribbon Mic —> Purely pressure-gradient Mic (bi-directional)
