Dynamic Processors (4) - Expander, Gates (2)
ex) Bass drum & Bass guitar - ‘Enhance attack’ trigger a copy of the bass guitar sound with the bass drum sound - Add gated bass guitar sound to the original bass drum sound in phase - To reduce attack, do something with the gated bass guitar sound by phase reverse - You can actually change ‘the timing’ by having one musician controlled when another plays
ex) Guitar - turns bass sound on/off Percussion - turns keyboard sound on/off Singer - trigger waves Horn - trigger wind sound
Signal flow for triggering (keying):
Drawbacks: - Bad effects on sound quality - Gating with no reason - You could clip off the front of what you want (fast release) - Pulsing stuff you don’t want can draw attention to it - Not smart enough to tell one sound from another. They only understand level.
Expander / Gate parameters: - Attack (ms): How fast the gate open : Time for gate to open once signal is above threshold (signal @ unity = 1:1) : μs (micro second, 1/1 million sec) to ms (1/1000 sec)
- Release (ms): How fast the gate closes : Time for gate to close once signal is below threshold (= in ms to sec) : may have linear or logarithmic release
- Threshold (dB): The point (in volume) where it starts to work : Below the threshold, Gate begins to close
- Ratio (Expanders): Compression rate of input to output levels after signal goes below threshold (If you get one soft, I’ll make you softer (1:3)) : Expander - from 1:1.1 to 1:10 : Gate - from 1:12 to 1:∞
- Range (Gates, dB): How far down it closes : Range from -1 to -50 dB
- Holds (ms): Hold the gate open for soft sounds you want (ex: sustain)
